Entry #22

Another Day – Another Adventure – Weeks 5 & 6

Monday, June 5, 2017

Since we were off at an event for three days over the weekend, the bathhouse suffered in cleanliness. So, we deep cleaned all the rooms & sprayed Peppermint essential oil to clean up the stench left from the malfunctioning urinal in the men’s room. Dustin, the maintenance guy, came right away to replace the waterless urinal filter that had malfunctioned over the weekend. YUCK! He also fixed the auto-closer on the men’s room door that stopped working while we were gone. Sometimes you wonder if cleaning so completely is warranted. But a comment from a woman exiting the ladies room proved it so. She said it was the cleanest public bathroom she had visited in quite awhile. Awesome!

Perry had a regular doctor’s visit to attend to & Beth went home to unload all her leftover products from the weekend’s festival. Although we did clean the bathhouse, it is our day off & we NEEDED to recover from such a busy weekend. Dinner out at Cheddars was in order!

Both of us had dental appointments so we went home early, got showers & arrived at Campbell’s Dental in plenty of time. This was our first visit at this new dental clinic so lots of X-rays & a deep cleaning was what we needed. Beth had a tiny little cavity below the gum line that caused her tremendous pain about a month before. But she opted to leave it be until later. We really liked the staff & the dentist at this place!

The park vehicles hosts are given to use are a hit & miss. Sometimes they work but not always. The host in Campground #1 has been quite unhappy with things in general & one of his complaints has been in getting gas for his vehicle. They were off for the day so Perry went over to the maintenance barn & got gas for both our vehicle & his, hoping it would help the situation. When the other host returned to camp he was not thankful but at least that was one thing he would quite complaining about.

Beth spent some time making up a handout about the Fort Yargo Living History Society for campers on the weekends they are at the park. After she printed them, we were told the group would be at the park every 2nd weekend of the month instead of the 3rd weekend as has been the norm for years. Oh well, an easy fix & just a few more pieces of card stock.

All in all, it was a good, productive day.

Beth opened the bulletin board in front of the bathhouse with the intent of cleaning the glass. However, the wasps who had claimed the inside as a home were not pleased & dive bombed her. Good thing we had wasp spray & won that war. Unfortunately, the wasp spray stained the papers in the display. We made plans to completely redo the bulletin boards with the park’s approval.

We put in another request for the bathhouse to be pressure washed & perhaps a regular pest control treatment scheduled. The bugs were multiplying as summer progressed!

After the morning chores & breakfast, Beth went home to get a big order done & delivered to the North Georgia mountains. She had actually been doing that regularly, making stuff or delivering products or getting orders off in the mail, but the blog is about camping so … there you go.

The park was FULL, not a spare site to be found. A couple RVs came in unscheduled & had to be turned away. We sold LOTS of firewood & there were beautiful campfires everywhere. Lots of laughter & good memories being made by happy campers.

Perry did stop a fella who was attempting to launch his boat at 9:30pm. The signs clearly say there is no boating after dark & the fella knew this. He just grinned & removed his boat from the water. All was well.

Because the park was full there were many more people using the bathhouse than usual. And the Yurts people rent have no bathrooms so they use the bathhouse, too. Then there is the boat ramp near the bathhouse that created more traffic & a large number of bike riders using the AWESOME trails throughout the park with the path leading right by the bathhouse. Lastly, the hikers desend in mass when the weather is cooperative. The yellow trail runs right by bathhouse #2 & hikers need a break. All in all, this created the need for frequent cleanings. Yes, we decided Campground #1 is easier because it is ONLY used by campers.

Perry went to the office & got a huge roll of green paper for the bulletin board. We cut several sheets before we got it to fit properly. Trial & error & lots of effort got it done. Beth decided how to set up the new displays & even created several new signs to include. Another trip to the office even produced more interesting things for the cases. We couldn’t get it completed in a day but it was a start.

While all this was going on, Beth lost her phone … again. She knew it was nearby because her Fitbit watch was vibrating when a call came though & the phone has to be within a certain distance for it to buzz. However, the ringer was turned off on the phone so calling it from Perry’s phone was not helping. After an hour or more of searching, Beth found it … in her shoe she had put in the closet. Unloading the car from a trip to the house made it necessary to put the phone in the shoe to carry everything into Wilbur. We laughed about that one.

The mass exodus of campers resulted in a line at the dump station. No tempers flared so that was good. We did a deep clean of the bathhouse once most were gone & made everything squeaky clean again.

Perry cleaned firepits as many had been heavily used over the weekend & he had to make multiple trips to the ash dump. Then he spent a couple hours straightening out wood in the shed. The last delivery by Community Service Workers was unsupervised & resulted in firewood being stacked at angles that could result in an avalanche.

We also did a deep cleaning of the ADA bathroom that had been closed up for months. The shower head needed to be replaced so the room was locked. Oh my goodness had the bugs taken over! Maybe it would be repaired before that much cleaning was needed again.

Perry got in his truck to return the roll of paper to the office & his truck smelled horrible!  Apparently, there was a dead creature in the center of the roll.  ICK!  Michael at the office managed to get the stopper out & remove the dead rodent. Just ICK!

The hosts in Campground #1 went home for a couple days so we decided to do a deep clean of their bathhouse. Perry also cleaned out EVERY firepit there. Cleaning means different things to different people I guess. And that’s all I have to say about that.

We had no Yurt visitors so we cleaned the village thoroughly. The park has a maid service that comes in after renters leave & they do a great job of cleaning the inside & the decks that overlook the lake. And it’s the Camp Host’s job to clean off the front deck, picnic pad, fireplace & grill. So we did that plus the walking path & the natural areas throughout. We also put all the canoes back on the rack & locked them up. It was hot & sweaty but it looked so good when we were done.

Beth did the audit as Perry had to be at the courthouse in Winder early. Beth joined him before court started as did the Mayor, Police Chief, one of Statham’s awesome police officers & the Public Works Director – all in support of Perry. This blog is not the place to write about the situation – & it’s far too insane to even verbalized. Just know goodness & truth rule. And we left that courthouse hand in hand with a HUGE win. Evil & lies will not alter our lives or Perry’s service to our sweet little town.

A celebratory dinner at Carraba’s was in order!

Thursday, June 15, 2017

After a quick clean of the bathhouse & the audit, we decided to kick back & relax for the day. We actually napped in the afternoon, something we rarely had the opportunity to do.

We also made a trip to Home Depot to buy some river rocks, paints & such to create Happiness Rocks as described on the Facebook page “Barrow Rocks”. Beth painted a few rocks with inspirational messages & then hid them at various places in the park. It was so fun watching little people find them & get all excited about their new found treasures!

When Beth went home for her daily shower, she made signs for the firewood sheds. SOOO many people have asked how much the wood costs we decided to put all the info on the signs & hang them on the wood sheds. It’s 12 pieces for $5 which is an AWESOME price. Also, the signs explain exact change is needed as there is a drop box in the shed – hosts don’t handle the money. The sign further tells all three locations a camper can get the wood if one or more hosts don’t happen to be onsite at the moment & it also says no firewood is sold after 9pm so there’s less of a chance someone will start a fire then, leaving it unattended overnight. We hung those signs & immediately began selling more firewood than ever before. It gives the camper the info they may not have wanted to bother obtaining before. Who knew?!

We had a sweet lady arrive with her mother & her daughter, renting a Yurt for the weekend. She had NEVER camped before so she had lots of questions. Perry went over to her site & showed her how to start a fire which she was thrilled over. Throughout the weekend, she visited other campers & viewed their trailers, with an excitement to eventually get one herself. She was a joy. Just a happy person we enjoyed having in camp.

Saturday, June 17, 2017

We had a busy day in camp but no incidents worth noting. Lily Bug came to spend the night which is always fun. She & Perry watched a movie & then she painted rocks with Beth. A night of drying the background color was needed so we set it aside & went to bed. The little Princess was so tired she fell asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow.

Sunday, June 18, 2017

Lily & Beth finished painting rocks first thing in the morning. And, after a short dry time, they sprayed the rocks with clear coat. Then we took the rocks around the camp in our personal golf cart & Lily hid them for kids to find. One little fella found one by the bathhouse & Beth got a picture of him with Lily & put it on the Barrow Rocks page. What a simple way to have fun & spread happiness!

After Lily left, we did a deep clean of the bathhouse & firepits. The campground emptied out almost all the way. It was peacefully silent for a day. Bliss!
