Entry #64 – MISSISSIPPI – April 26 – May 3, 2021

Good-bye Alabama!

I wish I had taken a picture … but maybe not. As we drove across bridges into Mississippi, I told Perry the bouncing was so severe my dentures would bounce out. And I don’t even have dentures! The scenery was wonderful but the roads were seriously lacking. Taking that into mind, I should have realized my fridge would have been in the “shake, rattle & roll” mode. When we got set up & I opened the door the entire tray of 14 eggs leapt to the floor in a chickadee malay! Biggest damn mess ever! One even jumped on me! I guess I got too comfortable & trusting of the fridge stuff not moving. Congrats to the stellar Mississippi roads!

On our first evening in the park we had a sweet couple who were camping right next to us come over for dinner. Katie & Waylon were about to begin a new chapter in their lives as Waylon retired from the Navy. Katie wanted info on how to plan their travels & where to find campgrounds along the way. I showed her my favorite app/subscription program – RV Trip Wizard. There are several free apps I have found useful but this one does more for me in routing & campground info. We know Waylon & Katie are destined to have a wonderful life, along with their beautiful pup, Noah.

The next day we drove about a mile to the gulf coast. Parking was easy & abundant. We walked along the beach for a bit & sat on the bench to watch the waves, birds & people. We also went to the Farmers Market but maybe it wasn’t yet the time of year good veggies were harvested locally so we left empty handed.

Resting along the beach.

As we continued driving down the beach road we spotted these guys doing their mechanicing at an odd place – gotta do whatcha gotta do.

We saw the statue of the fisherman in a clearing as we turned the car back in the direction of the campground so I hopped out to take a picture. It was right in front of the Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum (closed at the time) that had a huge sailboat inside.

The Fisherman Statue.

On another day we visited the Mississippi Aquarium. COVID kept it shut down for many months – almost a full year – & it was not fully open when we went. Many of the areas were fully open (masks on, please) & we loved every minute we were there. The shows (dolphins & whales & otters) were still closed but we did get to see the show stars in the tanks from below. Here’s some pictures from our visit.

Perry was intrigued by the gators.
Impressive paths to see all the fishes.
These guys were in an area where you could actually reach in & touch them. Except the blow fish. You didn’t want to touch the blow fish.
A three story tall circular tank was filled with tiny little fish – beautiful!
Stella, the shark with scoliosis.
This turtle kept an eye on us as we kept an eye on her.
And there were MANY birds in an awesome enclosure you could walk through.

Later we drove into Biloxi & found a GREAT BBQ restaurant right on the beach. It’s the kind of place you wish you hadn’t eaten all that was on your plate … so you could eat it again!

Another road trip on another day … Spontaneous road trips sometimes produce the discovery of significant gems! We found a fantastic museum on an Army base we just happened to drive near. Absolutely stunning displays. So much history of the various wars & conflicts in which our great nation participated in the quest for continued freedom.

We found the Military Museum on our way to Laurel, Mississippi where we immersed ourselves in the HGTV “Hometown” show location, staring Ben & Erin. While visiting an antique store there we met a cousin of Erin’s who owns the establishment (Rusty’s). He said the couple announced they were expecting a baby at Easter dinner a couple weeks before – great news! Adorable – not so little – town. Lots of beautiful parks & playgrounds & flowers & art. I wish we had taken more pictures. It was fun to visit so we will likely return someday.

Back at camp, we had a storm blow through & it was LOUD. Spice was all happy & perky until that first clap of thunder. By the time it was quiet again, she was a shaking mess & actual tears were streaming down her face. Poor pup.

After a good night’s sleep we packed up & headed to Louisiana!

Not all who wander are lost! #whereswaldocamping
